Heat Transfer Compound

Heat Transfer Compound

Heat Transfer Compound, often referred to as heat transfer mastic, is a compound used to enhance the thermal performance of bolt-on heating products. The compound is applied to the bolt-on jacket at time of installation. Heat transfer compound consists of graphite and one or more binder components which are formulated for different applications. Graphite is a good heat conductor with half the thermal conductivity of aluminum and more than 100 times the conductivity of air.

For ControTrace® heating elements and panels, CSI recommends Grade B or Grade 2 depending on the application.

HTC-B CONTROTRACE Heat Transfer Compound

Grade B has a maximum service temperature of 400°F and an indefinite shelf life. Grade B is non-hardening during installation allowing the installer unlimited time to position and secure pieces. Grade B can be installed at any ambient temperature but becomes stiff at very low temperatures.

HTC-2 HIGH TEMPERATURE Heat Transfer Compound

Grade 2 has a maximum service temperature of 1250°F and a limited shelf life (1 to 2 years for un-opened containers). Grade 2 is a hardening compound; installation must be coordinated to ensure pieces are fully secured before the HTC starts to harden. Grade 2 is water based and must be maintained above freezing.

For ControHeat® jackets, CSI recommends Grade 3 (or legacy Grade 1).

HTC-3 CONTROHEAT Heat Transfer Compound

Grade 3 has a maximum service temperature of 750°F and a limited shelf life (1 to 2 years for un-opened containers). Grade 3 is a hardening compound; installation must be coordinated to ensure pieces are fully secured before the HTC starts to harden. Grade 3 is water based and must be maintained above freezing.

For TraceBOOST® elements, CSI recommends Grade C or Grade 2 depending on the application.

HTC-C TraceBOOST Tracing Heat Transfer Compound

Grade C has a maximum service temperature of 400°F and an indefinite shelf life. Grade C is non-hardening during installation allowing the installer unlimited time to position and secure pieces.
